So much fun in Kindergarten!

We had a surprise today in Kindergarten! We cleaned off the easel to find this little elf and a note. We came up with a few names and voted that our elf would be named Snowflake. While the elf is traditionally part of Christmas/Santa, our elf will be helping/watching us show our Husky Pride! If we've been doing our job, our elf gets to have a party at night and we will find out about his mischief in the morning. If we don't do our job, the elf will leave us a note about what we can be working on.
Make sure to find out what "Snowflake" is up to daily this month. Did he get into mischief? Or did he leave us a note?

Learning to write...

In Kindergarten we start writing by labeling pictures we have drawn. To teach this concept we start with a drawing of a girl and begin to label her. This is what it looks like:
You may notice that some parts have only 1 letter, some parts have more. We practice listening for sounds in Kindergarten because it is a critical part of learning to read. Once we can hear a sound, then we identify it and write it down. If you look closely you will see labels for ears, head, necklace, body, mouth, etc. None of labels are spelt how you and I would, but we are Kindergarten and we are just learning.
Some of us are ready for more. Below you will see a drawing by RJ and how he labeled his picture. He is hearing a few more sounds than others. THIS IS TOTALLY KINDERGARTEN APPROPRIATE! Notice that he did not spell everything letter for letter correctly or even the correct letter for the sounds, but this is how we start writing and by the end of the year you as parents will be amazed how far they will go. PLEASE, PLEASE encourage your child to listen for the sounds they hear when printing. Spelling will just come later.

Enjoy the video of the last few weeks:)

Those Tricky Teen Numbers

Teen numbers can be especially difficult to remember. I remind my students every time we write a teen number that "Teen numbers always start with a 1!" Here's a great video to help your child learn these tricky teen numbers.

Field Trip Tomorrow!

We will be going on a field trip to MSU tomorrow, May 7th. MSU students, studying to become teachers, will be reading Curious George books and will have various activities to go along with each book read. The plan is to leave at 8:45 and return to school at 11:55 or so. We will have our recess and lunch as soon as we return.
Please speak to your child about showing Husky Pride and using self-control tomorrow so that we can make it a great experience for all.

PS. Permission is not needed because it was covered in your signatures at the beginning of the school year.

Favorite Coin Song!!!

This is by far our favorite coin song! It isn't the best video quality but the refrain is super catchy and it's truly helping my students remember the names and values of coins.

I Love to Read and a few other things...

The month of February is always an exciting time in Kindergarten! Not only do we celebrate "I Love to Read" month, but we also have Valentine's Day, President's Day, and the 100th Day of School to boot!
Just a few reminders... It's Olympic Readers! in my classroom. I'm hoping you've been reading with your child at home and that I will soon see the Reading Logs. Then I'll be able to move my students to a podium.

We also have the 100th Day Celebration coming up. Don't forget the following...

And last but definitely not the least...
Another video for you to enjoy!

January has flown by!

This has been the most unusual month for school! So many mixed-up weeks! Crossing my fingers that February gets back to a normal routine!!!!!
In your child's backpack you will find a note about OLYMPIC READERS! and 2 Reading Logs. The reading minutes this month not only count for the 400 Club, but also for the Olympic Readers Bulletin Board.  This is what it looks like.

Please return the reading log every time your child has completed 200 minutes of reading/reading activities. Each time one is returned, your child will move to a new podium. Hoping for 100% participation!!!

I also wanted to share with you what we've been up to this last month so I put together another slideshow of pictures. (Not my best slideshow. Too many other things to keep track of and get done.) Your child should recognize the songs, because we've been singing them a ton lately and they have become new favorites. Enjoy!

Snake Race

You might be wondering what a "Snake Race" is??? I thought I'd better share... to help encourage better first time listening we have a challenge. The Class vs. Mrs. Wolf. If ALL the students are doing there job with few to no reminders then they can earn a point. If not, I earn a point. If I'm teaching and students are talking or blurting out, I earn a point, etc. You can see how our day was today!

Yay for a GREAT Friday!
