Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!!!

It's simply beautiful outside right now! I'm hoping your children were able to get outside and enjoy the snow for a bit! I saw many families outside while driving my children around town. Sometimes it makes me wish my children were still little!
     Here's my latest slideshow! Enjoy!!!

Meet Sprinkles!

This is Sprinkles our class Elf. Our Elf is always watching and reporting to Santa if we are naughty or nice. So far Sprinkles has brought us a note and told us to read a book. Then we had to name our elf and to remember to never touch him or he/she might loose his magic! He's been watching us from different spots in the classroom. I wonder if he has anything else up his sleeve?!?!?! Make sure to check in with your child to find out just what Sprinkles has been up too!

(Can you say teacher who is willing to do ANYTHING to make it to December 21st!?!?!)

Hope you had a fabulous Thanksgiving!
I told myself I wouldn't come in over the break but here I am! I kept thinking of things I have been meaning to do... I have the video below and I also added a page for my favorite links. This page includes links to IXL and Read Aloud Books.
Enjoy the rest of your break!

So much fun!

It's been awhile since my last post so this video is a bit longer than usual. I couldn't help but smile at these kiddos. It amazes me how much we can learn while having a ton of fun along the way. Enjoy your week!

B.U.I.L.D. Math Skills

In Math everyday we complete our calendar routine and have a whole or small group lesson. Starting this week my class will start BUILD.

BUILD stands for:
B=Buddy Games  (Students played Spin A Number or Coin Matching Games)
U=Using iPads  (Students used IXL Math App)
I=Independent Work  (Students worked on Counting Flags with beads)
L=Learning about numbers  (Students worked on traced numbers and made numbers with Wiki Sticks)
D=Doing Math with Mrs. Wolf  (Students worked on shapes and counting backwards.)

Each day, for about 20 minutes (or more) we will split into small groups for additional math time. During this time I am able to focus on the specific math skills that each group needs. Sometimes this means extra practice on skills already taught and other times it means enrichment of the skills they already possess.

Ask your child about what they did for BUILD today:)

Tricky Teens!

Funny that I'm posting about the tricky teens because currently I have 4 tweens/teen-agers and they sure can be tricky... But that's not what I'm talking about for Kindergarten! We are working on recognizing our teen numbers since most of us already have 0-10.  This song was recommended to me by Mrs. Rehder a year or two ago and all of my students absolutely LOVE IT!  Watch out, it's a catchy tune. Here is the link:

Picture Nut!!!!

By now you are probably realizing that I'm a picture NUT! I take far too many pictures. It's exciting for me that I am now able to share them with you!
This week in Kindergarten...musical instruments, bus evacuation drill, bus snack, patterns, apple tasting to name just a few.

Have an AWESOME weekend!

Run, Run As Fast As You Can! You Can't Catch Me I'm the Gingerbread Man!!!!

Last week was great! My students are doing a fabulous job! (I'm knocking on wood right now!!!) We are only on Day 12 in Kindergarten and already we have written in our journals, completed a project, learned the phonetic signs for each letter sound of the alphabet and so much more.
One highlight was reading the story "The Gingerbread Man". Wouldn't you know it, while we were outside at recess, the Gingerbread Boy left us a snack and clues about where he might be hiding?!?! So of course we had to go find him! We searched the entire school for clues but in the end, we just couldn't catch him:)  He did leave us a cute project with directions and all, so we all got to make our very own Gingerbread Boy or Girl! So much fun in Kindergarten!

You might have also heard the we played the DIBELS "games" on Friday.  Dibels stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Success.  Each student in Kindergarten is tested individually in the fall, winter and spring.  The fall tests (games) include First Sound Fluency (Tester says "Duck," student hopefully responds with "/d/," so on and so forth for one minute.) and Letter Naming Fluency (Students are given a sheet with random upper and lower case letters and are asked to name as many letters as they can within a minute.)  I will use this information to help inform my reading instruction.  More to come on that another time.
Hoping you had a fabulous weekend.  Can't wait for another great week in Kindergarten!

Learning about our FRIENDS!

We are having a great time in Kindergarten!  Today we played a fun game to learn a little more about our friends.
#1 - Stack your thumbs.
#2 - Shoe to shoe.
#3 - Knee to knee.
#4 - Knock on the door.
#5 - Side by side.
#6 - Finger tips.
#7 - Reach for heaven.

(Then we pause to introduce ourselves and find out a little about each other with a prompt from me.)

#8 - Find a new mate.

The boys and girls had a fun time doing this as you can see in our pictures!

Fabulous 1st Day of Kindergarten!

What a fabulous first day!  We learned so many of our routines already... lining up, washing hands, walking in the hall, sitting at the carpet and so much more.  There was also a ton of FUN!  Ask your child about the games we played. (Freeze Game and Mosquito Tag)  So much fun!!!!!

Tomorrow will be a hot one!  I'm hoping my kiddos remember to dress cool.     :)

I thought the 100 degree day in May last year was HOT, but I was wrong!  With the combined humidity and the 95 degree plus temps!!!! SO INCREDIBLY HOT!!!
Even with all the heat the room has been coming together.  Hoping to post pictures soon of some of the pinterest ideas I put to use.

Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Oh my!  I have never been in school when it's actually reached 100 degrees!  CrAzY!!!!  And it was a late start Tuesday!  On top of that Kindergarten had Dibels testing today!  Whew!  We made it and had a pretty good day:)  Crossing my fingers for a cooler (warm, not hot) day!!!

So busy!!!

It's Mother's Day and I'm at school finishing up plans!!!  With my unexpected absence, having a multiple subs for several days, and needing to finish a Mother's Day project nothing seem to have been planned for the next week!
My room is now tidy, lessons are planned, new math review recorded, papers looked over, projects prepared, now updating the blog:)

On May 14th, my class will have their final DIBELS.  They will play 3 games – Letter Naming, Phoneme Segmentation (The sounds in a word) and Nonsense Word Fluency.  Please, please practice letter names and sounds and also blending any CVC word, real or nonsense.  Here is the link to practice Nonsense Word Fluency.

This week we will be reading “What Do You Know?” by Lorinda Bryan Cauley.  We will be working on the skills of re-reading and using the illustrations to help us better understand a story.
The new words being introduced this week are, “with” and “my” and the letters Jj and Qq. By the end of next week we will have covered the whole alphabet.
A few of the toughest words are coming up these last two weeks in reading.  Please continue to review all the star words.  Here’s a list to continue practicing at home.  I, can, we, the, like, a, see, go, to, have, is, play, are, for, you, this, do, and, what, little, said, here, was, she, he, has, look with, my. Next week the new words are: me, where.  We are hoping that all of these words become automatic.  This will help their fluency in first grade.

Mrs. Rehder (another K teacher) and I are so excited by the possibilities of Screencast-O-Matic! The app allows you to video absolutely anything that is on the computer screen.  Using the Notebook application the possibilities are endless!!!!  Today, we figured out how to use the webcam too!  The ideas for ways to teach reading and math keep running through my head day and night!!! This equals many, many sleepless nights, but it will be well worth it for my current and future students!
Stay tuned for lessons to come:)

Up and Running:)

I am so excited to be up and running.  I'm thinking this could easily become addictive.  So many more ways to connect with my students and family.  Hoping to add more ipad lessons that will include our curriculum's sight words, Mrs. Wolf's Rainbow Words, Dibels practice "games" and so much more.  A BIG thank you to Mrs. Ashley Rehder for her help setting up a blog and for also inspiring me to start using ipads daily in my Kindergarten Classroom!
